Today I submitted a potentially life changing request and I finally asked for retraining. I’ve known for a few years that I couldn’t spend the next 14 years in this career field and not loose my sanity. I know that I’ve got to get involved in a job that continually challenges me rather than only challenging me once in a great while. I hope I am making the right choice because I’ve thought long and hard about it. So, today was the initial step in the process and here is how the whole thing breaks down.

1. I select 5 different career fields that I would like to retrain into
2. AFPC (personnel command) takes a look at my RIP and determines if I qualify and notifies me of any paperwork/evaluations I need to do
3. I do whatever they tell me - get new security clearance/flight physical etc
4. I submit everything for my commanders review
5. AFPC looks at the package once a month for up to four months and picks the best candidates for each career field
6. I get notified if I am picked
7. I go back to tech-school and possibly move to another base -this all depends on if the job is available at McChord. They won’t move me to another base if they have a position here. Its all about saving some money.
8. I might get paid a re-enlistment bonus - I say might because the way I read it I don’t qualify - if they read it differently I would be almost immediately and completely debt free - it would change my life
9. I would be satisfied with what I do on a daily basis

Its a long process and could take 3-6 months but I’m optimistic that it will go well; lets hope it does
