Arizona has enacted a new DUI law that seeks to impose harsh penalties on first time offenders that are excessively drunk. Recently, as I’ve gotten to know more non-military peeps I’ve found that most of them aren’t afraid of getting a DUI. They feel that they can drive without any impairment and that if caught it won’t be that bad. They’ve weighed out the expected cost of a DUI and think its worth the cost - its economically feasible to drink in drive in their judgement.

So, instead of putting people in jail for DUI offenses I think we should make it economically not feasible for people to drink and drive. In my opinion, the govt should immediately seize their vehicle and sell it auction. If their vehicle is on a loan they should be forced to pay off the remainder while owning nothing at all. Car dealerships should check liscences to see if someone is suspended - they should face stiff penalties for selling a car to a person that has a recent DUI offense for the first 45 days. Rental agencies should also check their liscences for DUI convictions and not allow anyone with a conviction to drive for 45 days. Its an extreme economic penalty and the only thing we are missing is the legislative action and a national DUI database - it shouldn’t be that hard to get one going - what the hell else is the Dept of Homeland Security going to with their funding and massive work force?

There are some that will lawyer up and find that this penalty is mere pittance - heck they may cheat the system. Maybe a mandatory garnishment of 40% of an individuals earnings are in order. I’m not sure what people think they are doing while driving drunk but its extremely irresponsible behavior and I wish it would stop. Increase the penalty to a point that its no longer economically feasible and you’ll stop everyone except die hard criminals and alcoholics - these people can go to jail - the rest can pay an exorbitant fee to the govt and pay for better roads, or more cops, or whatever congress thinks is worthy of the extra income
