Once in a while I want to drink a beer and once in a while I hate my tastebuds. When those two events occur on the same day I slum it and drink cheap beer. A couple of weeks ago I went out to a bar for a friends birthday where I decided I would drink the worst of the worst. I started off with a Rainier - oh holy hell - it tasted like spilled beer thats been cooking in the sun for eight hours smells. I finished the night off with a good ole PBR. Its a massive can of beer for only a few dollars - the flavor was weak but it was beer. I caught an interesting article that reminisces about the cheap beer from our past - I saw a few on that list that I’ve had and many (thank god) that I haven’t. Feel free to check it out at Salon.

Oh - here’s my quote of the day - Drinking may cause memory loss. Or worse, memory loss

What happens tonight could really hurt him, but I have a feeling that it won’t hurt that bad. One of our mutual friends, Matt, is celebrating his 21st birthday party. I talked to my boss and I am going to take half of the day off tomorrow (the first half) so that I can attend the shenanigans. He may feel awful tomorrow but its not going to kill him - it’s an initiation rite that many of us have been through and almost all have survived without any long lasting injury. I don’t expect him to last long but I’ll be sure to take pictures of what happens - whether he wants me to or not.

In Iraq I really only knew a few things to be true - I knew that it was going to be hot during the day and I also knew that it was going to be dark and noisy at night.

.
When I finally left I rode out on dark and noisy military transport - a continuation of a theme. My camera doesn’t like extremely shaky environments full of low light conditions but I think I captured enough for you to understand how enjoyable the ride actually was for us. If you look at the bottom picture, cram yourself into a closet with 4-6 other people, crank up the volume to the maximum level on your speakers, and sit/stand there for three hours you’ll have a slight understanding of how “comfortable” it was

I’ve uploaded a few more pictures from my time in Iraq in the gallery - the new stuff starts on page 4

I got home and met a fantastic girl in the airport - well - I it wasn’t the first time I’ve met her but it had been quite a while since I had last seen her.

Jessica

We went home and she showed me around our house - where we had the lengthy task of unpacking looming on the horizon.

Luckily - I’m a task oriented guy and we got starting working at the task so it could be done - and so we could look forward to the party we were to have that weekend.

The house is complete with a garage and two dogs in the backyard - one of which will flop around like a fish if you ignore her.

We had a party and it was a great time despite me knowing only a handful of the people there - I met quite of few of Jessica’s friends but there names are already a mystery to me - damn short term memory. Feel free to check out more photos of the house in the gallery - thats it for now

Leaving her behind was one of the hardest things I’ve done in years. We left for the airport early this morning and quickly found out that my original flight plan was not going to work. Instead of flying through Denver to get to Baltimore we flew direct to Dulles and took a cab to Baltimore (where our hotel is). Travel wise it worked out fairly well and we ended up leaving 20 minutes after our originally scheduled flight departed. The other option was to wait around till 2PM - the other guys wanted to get to our destination and waiting to leave can really tug on your heart. Sometimes its just better to get it over with - leaving sucks, being gone still sucks but you can avoid thinking about it.

So - here I am in Baltimore on New Years Eve and I have nothing to do. I could go out and buy beer but I’d end up drinking alone - then again, if I went to a bar I’d still end up drinking alone. Oh well, such is my life.

So, as I had previously mentioned I was going to the Bears game. We both got dressed up in our game appropriate garb and headed to Qwest field.

Jessica and I at the game

On the way to the stadium I received my fair share of heckling and Jessica received a fair share of dirty looks for consorting with the enemy. We found our seats that were way way up in the stratosphere but at least I was at the game and I could see the whole field.

section 303 row U

The people around us were mostly locals and they really didn’t like my presence - mostly due to the team that I was supporting. I took it all in good humor and still had a great time. I noticed that USAA was giving away free seat upgrades if you registered in their contest so I sent a text message away and thought that was the end of it.

I was standing in line for the bathroom after the first quarter when my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the phone number let alone the area code but I still answered the phone. The guy on the other end told me that I had won! I was almost yelling into the phone and everyone around me was looking at me wondering what the heck had happened. They told me to go to the first floor in the SW corner. I was near the upper deck in the NE corner. I had a trek and little time to make it to my destination. I called Jessica and told her the great news. The people around her weren’t quite as happy as she was because well… I was the enemy and I was a bears fan. She ran down from her seat and left everything behind.

I ran the entire way. I got the tickets and found out that were in section 108 row F. We were on the 40 yard line on the Bears side of the field and we were only six rows from the field. I could not believe my luck. Check out the video to see our view from the field.

I uploaded a few more pictures that you can check out in the gallery and you can check out a play from the game here. Both of us were giddy as heck for the rest of the game and we had a blast.

I really wish the Bears would have won the game but I guess I can’t have everything. I still can’t believe that I won - it was the coolest gift ever.

You can also read Jessica’s take on the whole thing at her blog

We went to the Kwik E Mart in Seattle and took a few photos. I can’t wait to see The Simpsons movie. They were out of Krusty O’s but we did get some Buzz Cola. I was really hoping for some Duff beer but none was to be found. I did find a donut… mmm… donut… and it was quite good. Click the photo for the rest of the pics

Kwik E Mart fun

Oh yeah… a quick video too!

If only I could keep it up -

So, on Thursday night I spent the evening wearing a polo shirt that was provided to me as I stood directly next to the stage at a Faith Hill and Tim McGraw concert. For the evening I was a member of the security team. My only job was to be a visible presence, answer questions, and remove any fan that attempted to jump up on the stage. I only answered one question and nobody attempted to jump on the stage so it was a relatively boring evening. I’m not a fan of country music - save for Johnny Cash - so I almost fell asleep a few times. Jessica was with me and was watching from a different part of the floor. She was rather jealous of me and wished that I could have been sweat on by either one of them - I don’t quite get it. She had fun but it was an extremely long evening. If only it was music that I actually liked - Stevie Wonder would have been awesome.

Friday was another night of fun as we went to watch the Tacoma Rainiers play in a triple AAA game. I’m not a huge fan of watching baseball but when you go to the park there is a lot of other stuff to watch if you have little interest in the game. They also have two of my favorite food groups: brats and beer. I haven’t had a good brat in a while - you know, brat, bun, sour kraut, catsup ( or ketchup) - all the things that make it good. We were staying for the fireworks that were at the end of the game and I guess it was a good choice. The game was all tied up through the 9th inning and we gave up 5 runs in the top of the 10th. Three of them were from an unforced error… doh! Since the Rainiers hang out at the bottom of the standings I didn’t think they had a chance in hell of coming back from that one but a miracle happened and scored 6 runs. I was extremely tired by that point so I really didn’t care but it was one heck of an ending. There were fireworks after the game but I almost fell asleep. If I’m tired I’m willing to sleep almost anywhere.

Saturday - last night - I went to Katie’s house - she is one of Jessica’s friends. We imbibed large quantities of behavior influencing liquid. Needless to say…. I was inebriated. Good times were had by all.

draank!

The girl is making me pancakes right now - she could be a keeper. If only all of my time off of work was this enjoyable.

If I were an invertebrate I would be a slug. Throughout the course of the day I have barely done any work. I have spent most of my day looking for work but have only found scant little bits. I’m not a fan of looking for little tiny projects as I like to concentrate on the big projects. So, because I have done little I feel like a slug. Yes, I am a creature that can be destroyed if I happen to get too much sodium in my diet. For the last four hours I’ve been watching the clock slowly move and every half hour or so I tell myself how much time I have remaining today. It doesn’t help that it’s ridiculously nice today and I want to do nothing more than sit outside and enjoy the weather. If I was sitting in a kiddy pool filled with beer it would be splendid…  yes, I’m sure you’ve got a great mental image now.

Every day I ride an elevator and depending on my luck I get inside the smaller, cleaner elevator, or the larger, dirtier elevator. Both are unique in their own rights. Both elevators are slightly lethargic; they’ll take you to the floor of your choice but they open doors slower than an 80 year old with arthritis. The smaller elevator can carry fewer over sized items but it has a much nicer appearance. It comes with its own special smell on every ride. Today I sampled bleach, clean laundry, dirty laundry, tobacco, stale beer, Chinese food, and pizza. Once in a while I encounter another person that wants a ride from one floor to the next. More often than not, they aren’t traveling one floor, they are traveling from top to bottom (or vice versa). The larger elevator has the same footprint but has an unfinished ceiling giving it a maximum height of about 9 feet. The paint is fading and chipped in many places from the large articles that have been crammed in it at one time or another. Each elevator is unique. Each elevator takes me to where I need to go.

Is this post a metaphor relating to something else?

No, I just wanted to write about elevators
